    Offshore Work

    Lifeboat On-Load Release Gear Maintenance
    22 Minutes (1997)
UK 4394 - United Kingdom : Sale Only: £75.00 (excluding VAT & postage) (Postage: £6.00 + VAT per order)
    OS 4394 - Worldwide : PAL: £75.00 (excluding VAT, postage/carriage)

In the recent past, maintenance activity on lifeboat release gear has resulted in four fatalities. Investigations into these accidents has revealed inadequate work practices and inferior training, potentially confusing equipment and a lack of understanding of operating principals of the equipment.

Concerned by this spate of accidents, the Health and Safety Executive's Offshore Safety Division (OSD) began an initiative to prevent their reoccurrence, including a 22 minute video illustrating current best safe practice in relation to release gear maintenance.

Lifeboat On-Load Release Gear Maintenance uses a mixture of video footage, computer graphics simulation and realistic models to highlight the essential tasks of safe maintenance.
    This clear and concise video:

Covers the essential constituent parts of a typical on-load release gear system, showing - the workings of each part
    - their interrelation to each other
    - how each contributes to the operation of the system

Shows examples of equipment malfunctions caused by poor or incorrect maintenance

Illustrates the correct method of safely taking a lifeboat out of service, highlighting the important act of transferring the boat onto its 'hanging off' maintenance pendants. This procedure, incorrectly executed, has been one of the major causes of accidents.

Examines safe systems of working clearly showing the correct steps in carrying out maintenance, and how to return the lifeboat to service, so that it is instantly available in an emergency.

It focuses on the most commonly used release gear system found in the UKCS, the mills 'Titan' on-load release gear, however, examples of other release gears are noted for comparison.

This video is aimed at offshore maintenance personnel who are responsible for carrying out maintenance on lifeboat release gear mechanisms. It will also be of interest to all safety managers, and others responsible for safety on offshore installations and on ships and ferries.

Trainers of maintenance teams will find the video a valuable addition as a supplement to the manufacturers' and operators own maintenance manuals.

It has been produced by the Health and Safety Executive with the support of the Marine Safety Agency, (MSA), United Kingdom Offshore Operators Association, (UKOOA), International Lifesaving Appliances Manufacturers Association (ILAMA), and equipment vendors.

    Shipyard Safety

Three Steps to Safety (UK and Europe only)
    25 Minutes (1997)
UK 4397 - United Kingdom : Sale Only: £40.00 (excluding VAT & postage) (Postage: £6.00 + VAT per order)
    OS 4397 - Europe only : PAL: £40.00 (excluding VAT & postage/carriage)

Before work starts on either ship build or repair, employers are required by law to look at the work programme in order to assess any risks involved.

Three Steps to Safety is a 25 minute video from the Health & Safety Executive designed to help people employed in shipyards to work more safely and healthily by following three simple - but vital - golden rules.

STOP: Examine the job you are about to start and think about what you are doing.
LOOK: Study the processes involved, and choose the right equipment for the job.
LISTEN: Heed advice from your supervisor about health and safety procedures. Then act.

The video demonstrates that although good planning, physical control, sourcing and preparing the right equipment can reduce hazards, not all hazards can be eliminated. It describes the following key elements to safety, which should be reinforced by employers. These include:

  • Wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - different types depending on the work situation , e.g. gloves to avoid damage to the fingers through vibration; ear protection against noise and clothing to prevent chemicals contacting the skin.
  • Reducing the risk of fire and explosion by storing flammable materials safely.
  • Proper storage of toxic chemicals with sufficient hazard markers on the containers.
  • Ensuring that trained electricians carry out electrical jobs in the shipyards.
  • Taking steps to avoid slips, trips and falls.
  • Following safety instructions and giving advice to colleagues who appear to be acting in a way likely to cause harm to themselves or others.

"There are 3000 deaths a year from asbestos related diseases, all of which could have been prevented"

The Health & Safety Commission is proposing to tighten up the law to reduce the risks from asbestos which remains in workplace buildings throughout Britain in both the public and private sectors. A new duty to manage asbestos will be placed on those responsible for such buildings.

The Health & Safety Executive has produced a new video, "How are you today?" which aims to raise asbestos awareness and inform managers of their responsibilities.

The video is in two parts:-

Part One: Asbestos Awareness (16 mins) is aimed at workers in building related occupations and is the tragic and thought provoking story of Nick, a young builder, whose long term, cumulative exposure to asbestos causes his deterioration in health.

Part Two: A Managers Guide (11 mins) is aimed at employers and building managers. It outlines the responsibilities of those in charge of premises that may contain asbestos.

    Topics covered include

  • Identification of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM)
  • Risk Assessment
  • Management of Risks

Design out risks in construction and maintenance

Are you complying with the CDM Regulations?

This video looks at the design of safe access and places to work at height during maintenance operations. The video shows how those who design structures not only influence the safety of those who build them but also those who are involved in maintenance activities.

Key messages in this video are that:

  • Designers can have a major influence on the safety of those working at height
  • Designers need to consider how they can most effectively deal with risks to safety. The earlier in the design process this is done the better both for the control of these risks and for providing the most economic and efficient method.
  • There are many different ways to provide safe access and often the simplest solutions are the most appropriate equipment for the work.
  • High Designs will be of interest to designers, builders and consultants concerned with construction and maintenance activities at height.

    Available United Kingdom only

A SERIES of interviews with farm workers in which they describe suffering horrifying injuries while carrying out roof work serve as graphic reminder of the dangers of working at heights in 'Don't Fall For It', a new Health and Safety Executive (HSE) video for the agricultural industry.

The video is designed to raise awareness among agricultural workers of the dangers of roof work, and although it is only 12 minutes long, it neatly summarises the main precautions that workers need to take to ensure their safety.

The video opens with a worker recalling in graphic detail how he suffered a fractured spine after failing from a roof. This is followed by several more equally hard-hitting interviews with accident victims followed by scenes in which the narrator points out the typical hazards that lie in wait for those carrying out roof work.

In particular, the video explains in simple terms the main points that farm workers should remember when carrying out roof work. These include simple but often-overlooked tips such as remembering that a roof light is usually the weakest point on a roof, and the fact that the purlins - the beams which support the roof - are not designed for walking on.

The film's short running time means that the viewer's attention is less likely to wander while watching the video, while at just £38.50 a copy, the title is also one of the best-value health and safety videos currently on the market.

Statistics show that 1 in 600 agricultural workers will die in an accident. Between 1986 and 1996 the largest single cause of fatal accidents in agriculture and forestry was being struck by a vehicle. If you add to these figures the death toll from overturns, there is a significant risk associated with vehicle use on the farm and in forestry.

Fatal Traction is a new 12 minute harding hitting video, with accompanying booklet from the Health and Safety Executive.

It aims to give practical advice to those working in the agriculture and forestry industries on how to avoid these accidents. The video includes graphic reconstructions and interviews with families of accident victims and gives examples of simple control measures that can help reduce the risks. These measures include:

  • Ensuring all drivers have been trained in the safe use of the vehicles they drive
  • Thinking of possible dangers BEFORE starting any work by carrying out a risk assessment
  • Setting up a safe system of work
  • Driving safely - at a safe speed, ensuring all passengers are seated, and being prepared for the unexpected.
  • Fatal Traction is primarily aimed at students to reduce the likelihood of a painful and early death, though the messages it carries give important reminders to those already experienced in the industry.
